The short answer: Most newborn sessions take place between 5–14 days old, but beautiful newborn photos can absolutely be captured outside of that window too.
As a Katy, TX newborn photographer, I use a baby-led approach, which means your baby’s comfort always comes first — no matter their age.
The Ideal Age for Newborn Photos: 5–14 Days Old
Most newborn sessions take place between 5 and 14 days after birth. During this stage, babies tend to:
Sleep more deeply
Curl naturally into womb-like positions
Stay more settled when wrapped
Allow for soft, timeless posing
This is when we can capture those sleepy, snuggled newborn portraits many parents love.
However, this window is not required. Every baby is different, and beautiful images can still be captured later.
Newborn Photos at 2–4 Weeks Old
If your baby is already a few weeks old, don’t worry. Many families schedule newborn photos at 2–4 weeks, and sessions are still calm and successful.
At this stage, babies:
May be more alert
Stretch out naturally
Show more expressions
Still love being swaddled
These sessions often create a beautiful mix of sleepy and awake images.
Newborn Photos After One Month
Older newborns can absolutely still be photographed. Sessions simply shift to follow your baby’s cues.
At this age we focus on:
Wrapped poses
Parent and sibling images
Natural baby-led positioning
Soft lifestyle moments
Your baby does not have to be brand new for meaningful newborn portraits.
When Should You Book Your Newborn Session?
The best time to book your newborn session is during your second trimester or early third trimester. This allows me to reserve space around your due date.
Once baby arrives, we finalize your session date.
