A Houston Mom's Guide to Preparing for Your newborn Photography session

Welcoming a new baby into your family is one of life’s most beautiful moments. A newborn photography session allows you to preserve these early days while your baby is still tiny and new.

At Kara Beatty Photography, my Katy area studio is designed to be a calm, comfortable space where parents can relax while I safely and gently photograph their newborn. Preparing ahead of time helps ensure your session runs smoothly and allows us to capture timeless images you will treasure for years.

Here are a few simple tips to help you prepare for your newborn photography session.

When to Schedule Your Newborn Session

The best time to photograph newborns is typically between 7–14 days after birth. During this stage babies are usually sleepier and curl naturally into those sweet newborn poses.

Most families reserve their session during the second trimester, and we schedule your session based on your due date by scheduling a week after the due date. Once baby arrives, we adjust the date if needed.

What to Bring to Your Studio Session

You do not need to bring much to your newborn session. The studio is fully stocked with carefully selected wraps, blankets, and simple newborn accessories.

However, it can be helpful to bring:

• Extra diapers

• Bottles or feeding supplies

• A pacifier (even if baby does not normally use one)

• A favorite swaddle or sentimental item if desired

My goal is to keep everything simple and timeless so the focus remains on your baby.

What Parents Should Wear

For parent and family portraits, soft neutral colors photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your baby.

Great choices include:

• Cream

• Soft beige

• Light gray

• Soft pastels

• Earth tones

Avoid bright colors, logos, or busy patterns. Simple clothing creates a timeless look that will never feel dated.

Mothers often love wearing a flowy dress or soft knit sweater, while fathers photograph well in neutral shirts or sweaters.

Preparing Baby Before the Session

To help your baby stay comfortable and sleepy during the session:

• Try to keep baby awake for 30–60 minutes before arriving

• Feed baby right before the session begins

• Dress baby in a loose sleeper without a tight diaper

A full, sleepy baby makes posing much easier and helps the session flow smoothly.

Relax and Enjoy the Experience

Newborn sessions are intentionally slow and relaxed. There is plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and comforting your baby throughout the session.

Parents are welcome to sit back, enjoy a quiet moment, and watch as I gently photograph your little one. Safety and comfort are always my top priorities.

The newborn stage passes quickly, but photographs allow you to hold onto these memories forever.

How Long Does a Newborn Photography Session Last?

Most newborn sessions last 2–3 hours to allow plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and safely posing your baby.

Every baby is different, and sessions are intentionally relaxed so parents never feel rushed. My goal is to create a calm environment where your baby can stay comfortable while we capture a variety of timeless portraits.

Parents and siblings are always welcome to join for family portraits during the session.
