When Is the Best Time to Take Maternity Pictures?

Pregnancy is one of life’s most beautiful milestones, and a maternity session is the perfect way to celebrate the excitement, anticipation, and love before your little one arrives. One of the questions I hear most often from expecting moms is, “When is the best time to take maternity pictures?”

The short answer? Between 28 and 34 weeks pregnant.

As a Katy maternity photographer serving families throughout Katy, Fulshear, Richmond, and the Houston area, I recommend scheduling your session during this window for several reasons.

Why 28–34 Weeks Is the Sweet Spot

By this stage of pregnancy, your baby bump is beautifully round and noticeable, making it the perfect time to capture those timeless images you’ll cherish forever.

Most moms are also still feeling relatively comfortable. While every pregnancy is different, many women have more energy during the early third trimester than they do in the final weeks before delivery.

Scheduling during this timeframe also helps avoid the possibility of going into labor before your session.

What If I’m Expecting Twins?

Twin pregnancies often progress more quickly, and moms tend to become uncomfortable sooner.

If you’re expecting twins, I usually recommend scheduling your maternity session between 24 and 30 weeks. This ensures we capture your beautiful bump while you’re still feeling your best.

What If My Pregnancy Is High Risk?

If your doctor has classified your pregnancy as high risk, it’s always best to follow their recommendations first.

Many high-risk moms choose to schedule their maternity session a little earlier—around 26 to 30 weeks—to ensure they don’t miss the opportunity to document this special season.

When Should I Book My Maternity Photographer?

One of the biggest mistakes expecting parents make is waiting until they’re already 30 weeks pregnant to begin looking for a photographer.

I recommend booking your maternity session during your second trimester, around 20–24 weeks.

Booking early allows you to:

  • Reserve your preferred session date
  • Coordinate wardrobe options
  • Plan professional hair and makeup
  • Secure your newborn session if you’re booking both together

Both options create beautiful memories—it simply depends on the style you love.

Studio Maternity Sessions

Studio sessions offer a timeless, elegant look with beautiful lighting and a comfortable indoor environment. They’re perfect year-round and ideal for moms who prefer classic portraits.

Outdoor Maternity Sessions

Outdoor sessions provide gorgeous natural light and scenic backdrops, especially during golden hour. They’re perfect for families wanting a more relaxed, natural feel.

What Should I Wear?

The best maternity outfits are those that highlight your growing bump while keeping you comfortable.

Some of my favorite choices include:

Flowy dresses

Neutral colors

Soft textures

Simple jewelry

Barefoot or neutral shoes for outdoor sessions

For partners and children, coordinating colors work much better than matching outfits. Creams, whites, soft blues, earth tones, and muted greens photograph beautifully together.

Should My Partner and Children Join?

Absolutely!

Including your spouse and older children helps tell your family’s story. These images often become favorites because they capture the excitement of welcoming a new baby together.

Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute

Babies don’t always arrive on schedule.

While 40 weeks is considered full term, many little ones decide to make their appearance earlier. Planning your maternity session before 34 weeks helps ensure you don’t miss documenting this incredible chapter.

Consider Booking Your Newborn Session at the Same Time

Many families choose to reserve both their maternity and newborn sessions together. Booking early guarantees availability and creates a seamless photography experience from pregnancy through your baby’s first portraits.

Your newborn session is typically photographed within the first 5–14 days after birth, so reserving your spot before your baby arrives provides one less thing to worry about during those busy first weeks.
